A 9-year-old who was unresponsive when he was pulled from a swimming pool at a Sunday afternoon party in Shorewood has now died, the Hennepin County Sheriff says.
The Tuesday evening announcement said: "The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is saddened to report that the 9 year-old boy who was involved in a near drowning earlier this week has passed away this afternoon."
Authorities said the boy was at a residential pool with a dozen people around when the sheriff's office and South Lake Minnetonka police were called at about 3:15 Sunday. The sheriff's statement says parents were there at the time.
The pool was at a home on Peach Circle in Shorewood, the sheriff's office says. An investigation continues and a medical examiner will identify the boy.
3rd pool drowning in Minnesota this year
According to DNR data sent to BringMeTheNews, there had been an estimated 12 non-boating drownings in Minnesota in 2016, as of June 13.
Only two of those occurred in swimming pools. One was at a hotel pool in St. Louis County on Feb. 28, where an adult was found unresponsive. The other happened May 22, when a 4-year-old playing unsupervised in an indoor apartment pool was found unresponsive.
