Boy runs away from mom, says she tried to kill him

A St. Paul woman is facing felony charges after her 9-year-old stepson accused her of beating and threatening to kill him.

The boy ran barefoot to his elementary school Wednesday afternoon, crying and screaming that "my mom is trying to kill me," according to court documents filed in Ramsey County.

KARE 11 reports police were called to Dayton's Bluff Achievement Plus Elementary School on Bates Avenue around 3:40 p.m. Wednesday.

The principal told them the boy, who is a student there, had run inside the school followed shortly afterward by his stepmother, 24-year-old Tashay Caprice Johnson.

Johnson yelled at the boy, "I'm going to kill you," according to the criminal complaint.

The principal stopped Johnson from pursuing him further until police arrived.

According to the criminal complaint, the boy said he had walked home from school that day with his teacher, who wanted to talk to his parents about some behavioral problems he was having in school.

After the teacher left the house, Johnson told the boy he was going to get a "whooping," the complaint said.

The boy said Johnson hit him in the head with a blue baseball bat, hit him in the face with her fist and struck him on the arm several times with a belt, the complaint said.

The woman also told the boy, “I'm going to grab the gun and kill you," referring to a gun that a relative hides in the garage. That's when the child ran to school, wearing his pajamas and without shoes.

When police spoke with Johnson at her home, she denied hitting the child. The police found the baseball bat and then arrested her, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Johnson said school officials told her the boy is developmentally delayed. She was charged with malicious punishment of a child and making terroristic threats.
