De'Andre Lewis was released from jail Dec. 18, promising a judge that he would obey an order to stay away from the girlfriend he was accused of battering in November, the Star Tribune reports.

But he went to her apartment anyway a few hours later, and and her baby died, the Star Tribune reports. The infant was found dead at about 3 a.m. Dec. 19 in the woman's bed.

It's not clear what role if any Lewis played in the death, but the investigation continues and Lewis has been charged with violating a protection order, the newspaper reports.

According to a criminal complaint, Lewis had been in jail because on Nov. 11 he beat the woman, who had given birth three days before, the Pioneer Press reported.

The newspaper reported a 4-year-old in the apartment had begged police "Take my daddy to jail!"
