Group searching for Barway Collins finds body in Mississippi River

A group of young volunteers who were canvassing the North Mississippi Regional Park in the search for Barway Collins found a body floating in the Mississippi River Saturday afternoon.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office tweeted a body was recovered near 53rd Avenue North and Lyndale Avenue North in North Minneapolis, but didn't provide more information on the victim.

FOX 9 reports it was "the body of a child" and a source told WCCO the body is believed to be 10-year-old Barway Collins, who has been missing for more than three weeks.

Pastor Harding Smith, a spokesman for the Collins family, told the Star Tribune he thinks it is Barway.

Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek said at a news conference Saturday the medical examiner will identify the victim and release their name.

An identification could come Sunday, the Pioneer Press reports.

Stanek was accompanied by Crystal Police Chief Stephanie Revering, who is leading the investigation into Barway's disappearance.

Several previous volunteer and police searches have focused on the area around the Mississippi River, where police had gotten a tip that the boy's 33-year-old father was seen the day that the fourth grader disappeared on March 18.

Crystal police have named the father as a suspect in the case. The man denies any involvement.

Police have been stationed at the Collins' apartment all weekend, KARE 11 says.
