Brooklyn Park PD ended up with a lot of bikes and is donating them

Over the course of a year, police departments collect a lot of bikes. Brooklyn Park PD is donating its collection to kids in need.

The Brooklyn Park Police Department posted a picture to Facebook this week of a truck filled to the brim with bicycles.

There are a couple takeaways in this.

First off – a lot of people lose their bikes. So if you like your bike, keep an eye on it. Or mark down its serial number because the department says that number will "greatly increase the chance of having [your bike] returned to you."

Secondly, if you lose your bike and the Brooklyn Park Police Department ends up with it, you're essentially donating it. Because that's exactly what the department does with all those unclaimed bikes.

"When we are unable to locate an owner we need a way to dispose of them," officials explain. "A few of the bikes are in poor condition... those we scrap."

However, many are in great condition so the department donates those to Free Bikes for Kids (FB4K). It's a non-profit organization that fixes up gently-used bikes and gives them to kids who might not otherwise be able to have a bike.

This is the second year Brooklyn Park PD has partnered with the organization.

Bike Collection Day

Saturday was Free Bikes for Kids' Bike Collection Day.

The organization asked people to bring their unwanted bikes to nearby Allina Health hospitals or clinics.

More than 5,000 bikes are expected to have been collected.

Now they'll be cleaned and fixed up so the bikes can be distributed to kids in December.

In the last eight years, Free Bikes For Kids has given away 30,000 bikes.
