Bullets fly in St. Paul police chase; suspect critical

Fox 9 reports that a bystander was hit by a stray bullet and a man is in critical condition after police chased suspected burglars in the Merriam Park neighborhood of St. Paul around 4 a.m.

According to the Pioneer Press, St. Paul police responded to a reported burglary at a church near the 1700 block of Dayton Avenue. Police say they heard gunshots and were trying to stop a suspicious vehicle, when it fled the scene. During a brief chase, the suspect vehicle slowed and a passenger got out. A police sergeant followed on foot and the suspect was shot. He was taken to Regions Hospital with critical injuries. Police recovered a handgun at the scene.

Police say a stray bullet grazed a St. Paul man in his home. The man declined medical attention.

The Star Tribune reports the sergeant is being treated for a knee injury. He is on a three-day administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

Authorities are trying to put together a timeline to figure out what happened. They are still looking for the suspect vehicle and its driver.
