A burglary wave hits sports memorabilia stores in the Twin Cities

Police are investigating if the three thefts are being carried out by the same people.

A third Twin Cities memorabilia store has been targeted by burglars in as many weeks.

Twin Cities Sports Cards at 1200 Mendelssohn Ave N. in Golden Valley is the latest to be hit, with KSTP reporting burglars broke through the front window of the business on Monday night and stole two safes, weighing 150 and 300 pounds.

It's the second time in less than a year that the business has been targeted, with owner Rob Hunegs telling the TV station: "That heist [in Aug. 2016] we lost over $100,000 worth of merchandise, and so to have this happen less than a year later is devastating and heartbreaking."

He told FOX 9 that the two stolen safes contained cash and baseball cards valued at more than $10,000.

According to his website, Hunegs began selling cards nationally in the mid-'80s and built a national following under the name "Rob's Cards." He stopped in 1991 when "children and life" took him away from his hobby, but opened the Golden Valley store after retiring.

Previous stores that were hit

It's the third memorabilia shop in the past three weeks in the Twin Cities metro to be targeted by burglars, with GoMN reporting on Monday how $100,000 worth of goods was stolen from Ultimate Collectibles in Hopkins.

On Tuesday, Ultimate Collectibles updated its Facebook appeal for information about the stolen merchandise, saying they'd heard reports some of the goods were being offered in Chicago.

The first to be hit was Three Star Sports Cards in Roseville on March 28, KARE 11 reports, with thieves getting away with around $1,000 worth of cards. At this stage, Golden Valley Police Commander Steve Johnson told the TV station it's too early to tell whether the three burglaries are related or just coincidental.

Anyone with information about any of the thefts should call police.
