Bus drivers' surprise ice cream stop on the last day of school sparks controversy

Some say the drivers were just trying to be nice. Others say it's simply not ok.

People are arguing over some East Grand Forks bus drivers who brought kids out for ice cream on the last day of school.

According to the Grand Forks Herald and a Facebook post about the incident, some bus drivers there have a tradition of stopping at the local Dairy Queen on the last day of school before bringing kids home for the summer.

It's a sweet gesture; however, it's not a formal field trip and some parents didn't know about it.

That really upset Jackie Marks who expected her third grader to be home at 1:30 last Tuesday. When her daughter didn't come home, the Herald says Marks got worried and started talking to other parents who said the kids were at Dairy Queen. So she headed to the fast-food restaurant and picked up her kid.

The story has been getting a lot of reaction – with some people saying the drivers should have been fired, and others saying they should be thanked for doing something nice.

"Some people are always looking for something to complain about," Jessica Knutson Osborn commented on Facebook. "We are so lucky to have bus drivers that want to do something special for our kids."

Another parent wrote that her kids look forward to this every year, and others called the outrage an overreaction.

On the other side, some people said they understand Marks' frustration and said they'd be upset too.

"I don't think I would have even made it to Dairy Queen without having called the cops already, so Jackie is better than me," Stephanie Beck commented

In addition to not knowing where the kids are, some parents expressed concern over food allergies and whether they're properly supervised.

Marks replied to some comments on Facebook explaining she doesn't want the tradition to end, she just wants to be better informed.

According to FOX 9, the school will look into a better way to go about this yearly ice cream trip.
