Buy local: 5 Minnesota bookstores to visit this holiday season

Here are 5 ways to keep your dollars local.

With the holiday season in full swing, many of us are rushing around the city looking for the right gifts for our loved ones.

If you have a bookworm in the family, here are 5 local bookshops that have the best selection and service.

Magers & Quinn | Uptown
This Uptown staple boasts books as far as the eye can see. The knowledgable staff are essential for recommendations and also finding your desired book among the shop’s many nooks and crannies. Come here for new books under list price, used copies in great condition, and a bargain section for those looking to spend a little less. Big-name readings and signings regularly happen here too, which means you can pick up a signed book for yourself or a special someone.

Common Good Books | Saint Paul
Located near Macalester College, this shop is smaller than Magers & Quinn, but packs a well-curated selection. Along with a wall of fiction, the shelves and tables focus on non-fiction to poetry to biographies and much more. This shop is a great place to browse without becoming overwhelmed and more than likely, you’ll find a book you never knew you needed until seeing it on their shelves.

Milkweed Books | Minneapolis
Only a few months old, Milkweed already appears to be destined for great things. Located in the Open Book building on Washington near downtown Minneapolis, the bookstore is operated by Milkweed Editions, a local publisher. The heart of this bookshop comes from the multiple independent publishers and small press books they carry, including their own Milkweed Editions writers. If you want to step outside your comfort zone, their staff is more than happy to recommend a Milkweed Editions or another small-press writer similar to your tastes.

Red Balloon Bookshop | St. Paul
If you have young bookworms to shop for, Red Balloon Bookshop should be your go-to place. With a perfect at-home atmosphere located on Grand Avenue, Red Balloon is packed full of books for toddlers to adults. Red Balloon focuses mostly on children’s and middle-grade books, but also has young adult and adult fiction sections in the store. This bookshop also hosts kid-friendly events, readings and author signings all year.

Source Comics and Games | Roseville
Source Comics and Games is the best place to find all your comic needs. With a large selection of new and back-dated single issues, trade paperbacks, games, and all things related, this shop is great for browsing or picking up that hard-to-find comic. The staff is a friendly group of self-proclaimed geeks that are more than willing to talk comics or help you find what you need. The Source also has a great gaming community which holds game nights throughout the week.

Whatever you are looking for this holiday season, remember to support your community and buy local.
