A Cadillac went over the guardrail of a bridge Wednesday night and plummeted to the I-94 highway below, killing the driver and and seriously injuring a passenger.
The State Patrol says it happened just before 10 p.m. at the bridge that crosses I-94 in Minneapolis at 41st Avenue North.
The car was taking the curve on Washington Avenue to head west on 41st Avenue (which you can see here).
Somehow the driver lost control, and the car went over the bridge's guard rail. The vehicle came crashing down into the northbound lanes of I-94 and started on fire.
The driver of the Cadillac, 31-year-old Floyd Douglas Cunningham, died. 37-year-old passenger Lancha Robertson is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Both were wearing a seatbelt, and the State Patrol doesn't think alcohol was a factor. The roads were also dry at the time.
So far this year there have been at least 192 deaths on Minnesota roads – slightly behind last year's pace, when there were 202 at this time.
