Calves killed in barn blaze

Author:

Approximately 100 calves perished when a barn on a Carver County dairy farm caught fire and burned.

The Star Tribune reports fire crews remain on the scene at Halquist Farms on 182nd Street in San Francisco Township, watching the embers to make sure flames don't flare up.

Belle Plaine Fire Chief Todd Otto said the blaze was discovered when farm workers went to milk the cows this morning. No farm employees or firefighters were hurt, Otto said, and added that the owners of the farm are away on vacation.

The cause of the blaze has not been determined.
