Candidate hoping to become the first Muslim woman in Congress drops out

She was hoping to become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress.

The race for Minnesota's 1st Congressional District – which was left wide open this year when incumbent Rep. Tim Walz announced his run for governor – appears to have lost a candidate.

Regina Mustafa on Friday announced she's suspending her campaign for Congress, which was launched back in July:

As KTTC notes, Mustafa, who lives in Rochester with her husband and kids, has given no reason for why she's withdrawing from the race.

However, the station suggests one possible reason may have been her eyesight. Mustafa is legally blind because of an incurable condition known as Stargardt disease, and on Thursday, she tweeted about the challenges this poses on the campaign trail:

Her decision seems to signal the end of a historic campaign: had she completed the race and won, Mustafa would have been just the third Muslim elected to Congress (Rep. Keith Ellison, who represents Minnesota's 5th District, was the first), and the only Muslim woman.

Her announcement to run, which came back in July, also followed on the heels of another historic Minnesota election. Ilhan Omar became the nation's first Somali-American state lawmaker when she was elected to the Legislature.

Mustafa's campaign was not without its troubles, however.

In August, she received a threat from a YouTube user who made derogatory comments and said "she will be shot":

According to the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN), Mustafa contacted the Rochester Police Department over the threat.

CAIR-MN called on the FBI to open an investigation into the matter.
