A car crashed into a sidewalk in front of a popular St. Paul coffee shop Thursday evening – an incident that could have been deadly, but instead only left a few people with minor injuries.
Witnesses told WCCO they saw benches and tables "go flying in the air" when the when the car jumped the curb near the Dunn Bros. on Grand Avenue, near Macalester College.
Only four people were injured – "a miracle," according to Guillermo Olivos, a Dunn Brothers barista, who told the station they usually have 10-15 people sitting outside on the benches, drinking coffee.
The Pioneer Press reported none of the four people struck suffered life-threatening injuries; only two of them were taken to the hospital by paramedics.
Police told the newspaper the driver was heading east when he was apparently distracted by something inside the car and crossed over the westbound lanes, ending up on the sidewalk.
A police spokesman said the driver showed no signs of impairment. He was not taken into custody.
