'Career criminal' charged with stealing hundreds of items from cars in Minneapolis

A man accused of stealing hundreds of items from cars in Minneapolis has been charged after police recovered the goods from his home.

Calvin M. Rogers, 34, has been charged with identity theft and being a felon in possession of ammunition or a firearm, the Hennepin County Attorney's Office announced Tuesday. He is currently in custody.

Rogers is accused of stealing the items from vehicles parked in parking ramps near Minneapolis hotels, and then using people's stolen identities to pawn off the goods, the Star Tribune says.

In addition to the electronics, luggage and musical instruments, Rogers had 75 social security cards belonging to other people, driver's licenses, credit cards, passports and checks – some of them filled out in Rogers' name, the criminal complaint says.

He had the identities of over eight people, the complaint notes.

Police tracked Rogers down while they were following up on a report of a wedding gift theft, WCCO says. Surveillance video from the parking ramp eventually led investigators to Rogers' Minneapolis home and all the stolen loot.

While searching the home, investigators also found several boxes of ammunition, which prompted the additional felony charge, because Rogers – who officials call a "career criminal" – is prohibited from possessing ammunition, charges say.

Minneapolis police are now tasked with trying to get the stolen items back to their rightful owners. Anyone who believes they may be a victim are asked to call police at (612) 673-5148.
