Cathedral's resurrected organ won't make Easter debut

The larger of two historic pipe organs at St. Paul's Cathedral restored won't be ready in time for Easter services as originally planned, the Star Tribune reported.

Acting Director of Sacred Music Lawrence Lawyer tells WCCO the 1963 Skinner gallery organ's 5,000 handmade pipes are still undergoing refurbishment as part of a $3.4 million restoration of the church's two organs.

Restoration of the older organ, a 1927 Skinner, was completed last year and will be available for Easter.

Lawyer beamed at the prospect of the two organs together in an upcoming summer concert at the Cathedral.

"We can play concertos with orchestra and I can do double organ pieces more easily. It’s really exciting! The sounds we are going to have, the pontifical trumpet for example, it’ll part your hair!” Lawyer told WCCO.

No date has been set for when the massive organ will be ready. The newly-designed console was installed in February and weighs more than 1,100 pounds.
