Cecil the lion is the most influential animal of the year, Time says

Time just named Cecil the lion the most influential animal of the year.

His death last summer fueled a federal investigation and international outrage, prompting some to look at the bigger picture of big game hunting.

Walter Palmer, a Bloomington dentist, admitted to killing the famed African research lion while hunting in Zimbabwe. Officials frmo the country said he won't be charged with a crime.

The dentist was publicly shamed, and even Jimmy Kimmel addressed the lion's killing – causing him to cry on-air.

Time says Cecil's death showed that "big game hunting was no longer socially acceptable," with the publication adding the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service added two subspecies of lion to the endangered list, making it illegal for U.S. citizens to hunt them. Dozens of airlines said they would not transport big game trophies.

"Plus, Jimmy Kimmel cried," Time concluded.
