Cost of natural gas at 10-year low

CenterPoint Energy told WCCO, January's home heating prices are at their lowest point in 10 years. The company says heating demand is down 14 percent compared to last winter. A spokesperson says the average gas bill is about 25 percent less, a trend that is expected to continue into 2012.

About 46 percent of CenterPoint Energy's Minnesota customers who were pushed into a higher pricing tier during a controversial pilot program will start seeing refund credits on their bills Monday. The refunds are the result of a complaint filed by Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson that claimed unfair pricing.

Xcel Energy profits up 3.6 percent

Higher rates helped boost the electric and natural-gas utility company. However, Xcel is concerned the mild winter weather could hurt its bottom line. The Minneapolis-based company operates in eight states.
