Charges: Strangers raped woman after she left downtown Minneapolis bar

It happened outside Maruso in downtown Minneapolis.
Publish date:

A woman leaving a downtown Minneapolis bar in the early hours of the morning was raped by two strangers.

One of the men, 28 year old Richard Hogan, of address unknown, has been charged this week in Hennepin County with 1st and 2nd degree criminal sexual conduct.

According to the criminal complaint, Hogan and another unidentified man approached the victim as she waited for her mother to pick her up outside Maruso at 715 Hennepin Avenue around 6 a.m. on Sept. 7.

Surveillance cameras outside the bar captured the attack, which started when Hogan and the other man lifted up her shirt to expose her breasts, before starting to suck on her nipples.

Hogan is then alleged to have penetrated her vagina with his hand, with both men preventing her from leaving and telling her, "You like this."

The men then pulled their pants down to expose their penises, attempting to force the victim to give them oral sex.

She buried her head in her lap to stop from having to do it, before the assault stopped when a passerby told the men to leave the victim alone.

Police identified Hogan from a DNA swab taken from the victim's nipple, which was a match for Hogan, who has a history of sexual assault. He also failed to register as a predatory sexual offender – an offense for which he is currently jailed in Olmstead County.

Further investigation of Hogan had been cited the day before for public urination, with police finding he was wearing the same clothing the next day when he carried out the assault.

The other man, who is believed to be homeless, has not yet been caught by police.
