Chasing average: Twin Cities finally hit 70 degrees again

For only the third time this year the temperature has reached 70 degrees in Twin Cities, which is the average for the date.

It's been a long-time coming – the last time it was 70 degrees in the metro was April 20.

Temperatures reached the high 60s and 70s for most of the state by Sunday afternoon, which had people packing patios, donning shorts and sandals, and enjoying the respite from the gloomy weather that's chilled the state for the last few ... months.

More than 4,000 people got to enjoy the outdoors for a good cause Sunday morning as they participated in the 10th annual Get Your Rear in Gear Walk/Run, WCCO reports. The event raised $250,000 for colon cancer awareness, the news station notes.

It looks as if the warmer weather is going to stick around this time. Rain and thunderstorms are forecasted for Monday, but after that, it's sunshine and temperatures in the high 60s and 70s for the remainder of the week for much of the state.

Now that we've returned to 70 degrees, dare we ask when we'll see 80s? Last year it was on April 28, and the average first 80-degree day is May 3, FOX 9 says.

Although we may be close on Tuesday (the forecasted high is 77 degrees for the Twin Cities), the news station says that if we continue on the track we've been on, it may not be until next month – which could set another weather record for one of the latest dates for it to hit 80 degrees in the Twin Cities for the first time.

Here's a glimpse at the forecast around the state:
