Officials say four officers from Orono were taken to the hospital early Tuesday morning after being exposed to hazardous chemicals while out on a call, WCCO-TV reports.

According to authorities, the officers were responding to a report of a man passed out in a car Monday night at about 9:15 p.m. in 3300 block of Shoreline Drive in Navarre.

When the man, who was allegedly combative, refused to leave his car, police attempted to remove him and noticed a strong chemical odor coming from the vehicle.

Officials said when the officers began feeling light-headed and felt burning in their throats and eyes, they were transported along with the man to North Memorial Medical Center.

Fox 9 reports that Long Lake fire crews and a hazmat team from Hopkins responded to the chemical threat and the area was evacuated.

Officials cleared the area by about 1:30 a.m.

KARE 11 reports that all four officers were treated and released at about 4 a.m., but the man remains hospitalized.
