A 5-year-old boy was in critical condition after he fell through a window screen from the fourth floor of a north Minneapolis apartment building early Tuesday and was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center, WCCO reported.
The Star Tribune reported that Sakaria Mohamed was in serious condition. The boy landed on grass, the newspaper reported.
The fall happened after 8 a.m. at the Park Plaza Apartments in the 500 block of Humboldt Avenue N., local media reported.
Police warned parents of the dangers that open windows pose for children. Screens are not a safety net, Fourth Precinct Police Inspector Michael Kjos said, the Star Tribune reported.
A study in 2011 reported that 5,000 children a year fall from windows. The study in the journal Pediatrics concluded, "These injuries are an important pediatric public health problem, and increased prevention efforts are needed, including development and evaluation of innovative prevention programs."
