Cities big and small urge shoppers to buy locally

Black Friday brings images of bargain hunters lined up outside retail big boxes. But plenty of business owners hope the day after will feature foot traffic streaming into mom and pop shops. Small Business Saturday is trying to earn a spot in the lineup between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Why shop locally? The Prior Lake American has at least 10 answers. While they start with supporting the local economy, some less altruistic reasons include staff expertise and customer service.

One of the state's most successful family-owned banks is also in on the push, with a campaign that sounds a little like a shoplifting exhortation. KleinBank's "Swipe Local and Share Local" effort includes donations to local charities whenever shoppers swipe the bank's debit card in one of the eighteen towns where the bank has branches.
