City, preservation group seek middle ground on aging Peavey Plaza

Author:

Once slated for demolition by the Minneapolis City Council, downtown's crumbling Peavey Plaza will likely remain in some form or another.

The City Council authorized the demolition more than a year ago to make way for a $10 redo that would have been largely privately funded, the Star Tribune reports. But the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota took the city to court, arguing that the 38-year-old plaza is historically significant.

In the meantime, the city's demolition permit expired and the two sides are working to reach a settlement before a judge holds a hearing on Aug. 23.

Assistant City Attorney Erik Nilsson told the Star Tribune that the two sides are "attempting to reach consensus on a design that preserves more of the original Plaza design."

Earlier this year. the National Register of Historic Places recognized the 1975 creation of M. Paul Friedberg as a gem of Modernist design.

In a 2012 New York Times report, Friedberg made it clear that the plaza should not change and came up with a set of design additions that he believes would bring the space "into the 21st century."
