Closing: Lighthouse at Emily's, popular North Shore eatery

Borrowed time, it seems, has run out for a beacon of roadside dining along one of Minnesota's most scenic drives.

The Lighthouse at Emily's, a popular nautical-themed restaurant on the North Shore's Highway 61 near Knife River, will close its doors on Oct. 25,

" target="_blank">according to a Facebook announcement.

This comes about a year after the eatery's first closure. It happened when the owner of the 86-year-old building – where Lighthouse moved in 2011 after having spent a few years at an original location – put the property up for sale and the restaurant operators weren't interested in buying, the Duluth News Tribune reports.

However, Lighthouse re-opened in January on a month-to-month lease when the North Shore Scenic Railroad expressed interest in buying the building and adding it to their train route – with the restaurant as a possible stop, the Lake County News Chronicle reported.

But the eatery says negotiations between the railroad and the property owner came to an end earlier this month with no agreement for a purchase, the Duluth News Tribune reports. Additionally, the owners "found it very difficult to operate" Lighthouse on a month-to-month lease.

When they close their doors on Sunday, it will be "for good," according to the Facebook announcement.

Some 35 employees will lose their jobs as a result of the closure.

In June, the owner of the property, Kristine Ehlen, wrote a piece in the Lake County News Chronicle saying it was up for sale and on the open market.

The Lighthouse is one of a few restaurants on Highway 61 – which snakes along the shore of Lake Superior – between Duluth and Two Harbors.

Despite the closure, the diner says it'll be business as usual, with normal operating hours and live music until the end.

The Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal noted last year that Lighthouse had become a "popular tourist destination."
