Cold November turns into frigid Dec. 1 – but a big warm-up is coming

Minnesotans around the state endured a jarring round of cold air to start December, as temps struggled to reach the high single digits in many areas and wind chills remained well below zero.

It's the coldest we've seen so far this winter – though November was still plenty cold, at least historically.

It was the coldest November in 23 years, WCCO reports, and good for the ninth-coldest November on record.

That led into this Dec. 1, in which the state average temperature as of 3 p.m. was a whopping 5 degrees. The only area of respite was in the southwest, which saw temps in the enviable teens.

Wind chill values remained at or below zero even through the "warmest" part of the day. The subzero "feels like" temperature could cause some problems on Minnesota roads, KSTP notes.

"When temperatures get down around zero or below, exhaust from slow-moving traffic can cause black ice to form. We might get to that point Monday morning," KSTP Meteorologist Dave Dahl said.

Warm-up on the radar

But there is some good weather news ahead.

A slow but steady warm up is expected starting Tuesday. Winds will switch around to the south Monday night bringing in some warmer air. Look for highs in the middle 20s Tuesday afternoon in the Twin Cities. However, it's going to be breezy – south winds at 10 to 15 mph.

That mercury continues to rise thereafter. Expect temps to rise into the 30s by Friday with middle to upper 30s possible this weekend.

Besides a few flurries Tuesday, little to no snow is expected this week.

Long-range models continue to hint at a major thaw starting the week of Dec. 8.

A huge ridge of high pressure will build over the midsection of the country. This could allow temperatures to soar into the 40s, which would take a big hit to the area's snowpack.

We just need to get there first
