Cold Spring: searching for a shotgun ... and an answer to 'Why?'

Volunteers in Cold Spring helped law enforcement search for a shotgun that authorities believe was used in the fatal shooting of a police officer last week. KARE-11 reports searchers combed areas including the Sauk River and a parcel owned by Cold Spring Granite. They're looking for the weapon used in the killing of Cold Spring Police Officer Tom Decker, who was shot to death in an alley as he responded to a call late Thursday.

The suspect in custody in connection with Decker's killing was the man whose welfare police were asked to check on by a caller concerned he was suicidal. Police describe the shooting that followed as an ambush.

Having the suspected shooter behind bars is not all that Cold Spring residents want. One told the Star Tribune "We need to know, why did it happen? What snapped in this person?"

The incident also brings out difficult memories of previous violent tragedies in the area. Fox 9 reports having lived through another police shooting in a neighboring town and a school shooting at their own high school doesn't make things any easier for the people of Cold Spring.

Meanwhile, the town is preparing for Wednesday's funeral service for Decker. KSTP reports law enforcement officers from around the country will descend on the service at St. John's Abbey in Collegeville.
