Colombian children seek Minnesota homes

KARE 11 reports that 11 children from Colombia are at camp in Shoreview this week, having a good time but hoping to find families that will adopt them.

"They're under the impression they're on vacation at a camp, just like any other camp that anybody's been to in the summer," said Lindsay Swiggum, spokesperson for Camp of Dreams.

The children, ages 4 to 13, will be at camp at the Ona Orth Ministry Center through Dec. 2. On Tuesday they visited Santa at a department store.

"Every child asked Santa Claus for a family for Christmas," said Swiggum. ""And by the end of it Santa was in tears."

The camp is sponsored by Friends of FANA, Minnesota. FANA is an orphanage in Bogotá. More than 350 children from FANA have been adopted by families in the Upper Midwest, according to its website.

The camp is FANA's attempt to help older children before they turn 16, when they are no longer eligible to be adopted.
