An Illinois man is under arrest after he was found with a 13-year-old girl reported missing Tuesday from her home in Bemidji.
The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday investigators suspect the girl met the 21-year-old man on social media and he picked her up at her house.
He's in jail awaiting charges that could include criminal sexual conduct and deprivation of parental rights, Chief Deputy Ernie Beitel said in a statement.
The sheriff's office issued an alert Tuesday saying the girl was missing and "possibly in danger." They also asked the public to look out for a white Jeep with Illinois plates.
She was found with the suspect a few hours later in Minneapolis.
What investigators say happened
The sheriff's office got a call at about 9 a.m. Tuesday from a parent of the girl, saying she was discovered missing that morning and was not at school.
The parents said she'd been acting strangely, and a couple of days earlier a neighbor had confronted a stranger in the area.
That neighbor gave the license plate number of the man's Jeep to investigators, who found it belonged to the 21-year-old from Oswego, Illinois.
Deputies determined the suspect and the girl may have traveled to the Twin Cities. The deputies got help from state agents and the Minneapolis and Bloomington police departments in finding the pair.
