Another committee hearing for a bill to legalize same-sex marriage is scheduled in the Minnesota House of Representatives.
MPR reports that the House Ways and Means Committee called a Monday hearing for the bill after a Minnesota Management and Budget fiscal analysis found legalizing same-sex marriage would cost the state money.
The Star Tribune reports the cost to the state would be about $678,000 a year to provide health insurance benefits to same-sex spouses of state employees. Those costs would be slightly offset by fees collected from gay couples getting marriage licenses.
House Speaker Paul Thissen, DFL-Minneapolis, said he will not bring up the proposal for a floor vote until he is sure it has the votes. The Senate is believed to have a larger majority of votes to pass the measure.
