What's happening?

Costco is planning to add an 11th Minnesota store in the near future.

The warehouse club retailer has put in a bid to buy a parcel of Heritage Park in St. Cloud for $3.5 million, so it can open a 150,000-square-foot-plus store on the land.

Details of the deal can be found in this St. Cloud City Council agenda.

The plan

Costco wants to build on 18 of the 92 acres that comprise Heritage Park, adjacent to 2nd Street South and 33rd Avenue North.

It hopes to be able to clear the land, build the warehouse and open the store all within 2018.

The city plans to use some of the money to buy Talahi Woods and expand George Friedrich Park, replacing the parkland lost through the Costco development and expanding on it.

The money will also be used to fund roadway improvements and relocate the skatepark at Heritage Park.

Costco in Minnesota

If approved by the city council, the St. Cloud store would become just the third Costco outside of the Twin Cities metro – the others are in Baxter and Rochester.

It has seven stores in the Twin Cities – Coon Rapids, St. Louis Park, Maple Grove, Eden Prairie, Woodbury, Maplewood and Burnsville.

Its rival Sam's Club, meanwhile, has 11 stores across Minnesota – including one in St. Cloud.
