The newspaper found Benton and Stearns most recently reported minimal operating surpluses, while Sherburne has lost thousands of dollars.

Stratosphere fair ride shut down yet again

The Stratosphere swing ride, which has malfunctioned several times this year at the Minnesota State Fair, was shut down again Wednesday night, fair officials said. Guests were let off the ride and it was tested without riders, WCCO reported. Operators are now changing out a part as a safety precaution. Late Wednesday, it was not clear when the ride would reopen.

Carnival worker gives birth at Freeborn Co. fair

The 2012 annual fair in Freeborn County kicked off appropriately enough with a birth – in a bathroom near the Cattle Barn. A baby boy was born Tuesday to parents who both work for the carnival group Merriam’s Midway Shows, the Austin Daily Herald reports. Dale Merriam, a semi-retired owner of the traveling carnival, said the mother had worked just Monday night until after midnight setting up for the fair. A collection was being taken for the parents.

DWI crackdown targets 13 counties

From now through September law enforcers will focus on the counties that in recent years have accounted for nearly half of the alcohol-related deaths on the roads. That includes Hennepin, Ramsey, Anoka, St. Louis, Dakota, Wright, Olmsted, Rice, Washington, Stearns, Sherburne, Scott and Carver.

Becker County wrestles with huge increase in child abuse

The court system has seen a 200 percent increase in child abuse cases and the county attorney calls it "the most important thing we do in our office here." No one knows exactly why the abuse seems to be skyrocketing, but some point to the stress of a poor economy.
