Crane barge breaks free during heavy rain in Wisconsin; flash flood warning issued

A crane floating on a river barge near downtown Eau Claire broke free and began floating away Monday evening.

According to WQOW, the tall piece of equipment was being used on the Confluence Project construction site, where the Eau Claire and Chippewa rivers meet. It's thought the changing water levels due to the recent rains then caused it to break free and float down the Chippewa River, the station says.

WEAU reports the crane got stuck on a sand bar, keeping it from fleeing further. A tug boat dragged it back into place.

Flash flood warning

Heavy rain is causing problems for people too, not just giant cranes.

Heavy rains hit the area over the weekend, including a reported 6-plus inches in Osseo and Willard, the National Weather Service tweeted.

Then more came overnight Monday into Tuesday, prompting the service to issue a flash flood warning through 9 a.m. Tuesday for Pepin and Eau Claire counties.

Water collected on some streets, which was expected to impact morning traffic.

It's expected to continue moving eastward through the state.
