Cretin-Derham Hall mourns 2 students who died in separate incidents

Students and staff at Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul are grieving for two students who died over the weekend in separate incidents.

Junior Max Lowell died in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday in Eagan. On Monday, students and teachers also learned that another student had died over the weekend. He was identified as senior Ben Mueller on the school's website. Circumstances of his death were not immediately released.

Lowell, 16, of Inver Grove Heights, was described by those who knew him as a friendly, hard-working student, and a member of the football and wrestling teams, the Pioneer Press reports. "Max was a wonderful young man, and this is a real loss to our community," Richard Engler, president of the Catholic school, told the newspaper. "We're going to miss him terribly."

Friends told Fox 9 that the 6-foot-3, 250-pound lineman was known for his big heart.

Lowell last summer went on a mission trip to Costa Rica with other teens from his church, River Valley Church in Apple Valley, the Pioneer Press reported.

"He truly had the joy of Christ in his heart," Ken Clark, a friend of Lowell's from the church, told KARE 11.

A memorial service for Lowell is scheduled for noon Wednesday at River Valley Church. He is survived by his parents, four sisters and two brothers, according to his obituary.
