Crystal school closed as police investigate reports of gunshot nearby

A school in Crystal, Minnesota, closed on Wednesday as authorities investigated a reported shooting nearby.

In a statement on its website, the Prairie Seeds Academy said: "There was an incident in area today and we have been asked to close the school. We apologize for the inconvenience. As a result the school is CLOSED for today, August 26, 2015."

"Any students that have been picked up will be dropped off," it added. "We are coordinating with the buses to get everyone home safely."

KARE 11 reports that police are investigating a suspected shooting nearby, after officials responded to a report of a shot being fired, though nobody has been injured.

Crystal Police Department said on its Facebook page that the incident happened in New Hope.

A resident of 62nd Avenue North and West Broadway told KARE 11 she was awoken by a gunshot at around 6 a.m., while another told KARE 11 she heard two gunshots at around the same time.

A SWAT team did a sweep of the academy at 9:30 a.m. and the search for the suspect continues, the TV station says.

"If your children attend Prairie Seeds Academy, the school has been closed for the day as a result of an incident in New Hope overnight," Crystal police said.

"There may be increased police activity near the school while police ensure that the facility and surrounding area is safe."
