Cub Foods owner Supervalu hacked, data breach investigated

Minnesota consumers could have had their financial information stolen in a broadscale hacking scheme involving Eden Prairie-based Supervalu grocery stores.

Supervalu, which owns the Cub Foods grocery stores, acknowledged that customers' payment card details may have been stolen in transactions at some of the chain's supermarkets.

Bloomberg reports data may have been stolen from cards used at Supervalu stores from June 22 to July 17. The Associated Press reports stores in Minnesota, along with those in Virginia, Illinois, Maryland and Missouri, are among those that may have been affected.

In a statement, Supervalu said payment companies have been notified and law-enforcement agencies are investigating. The statement said Supervalu stores – including Cub Foods, Hornbacher's Farm Fresh, Shop 'N Save and Shoppers Food & Pharmacy – could have been hit.

In Minnesota alone the company says there were nearly 60 stores impacted. Stores in both the metro area and in rural parts of the state were affected.

“We have had no evidence of any misuse of any customer data,” Supervalu Chief Executive Officer Sam Duncan said in the statement. “I regret any inconvenience that this may cause our customers, but want to assure them that it is safe to shop in our stores.”

Supervalu becomes the latest retailer whose systems have been compromised. Target Corp. is still recovering from the December data breach that allowed hackers to gain access to payment data for 40 million customers’ cards. Cybercrime costs as much as $575 billion a year.

On Thursday, industry trade publication Supermarket News reported Supervalu was in a strong position, with sales up nearly 1 percent over last year and positive same-store sales for the first time since 2008.
