Customs officer found dead at Minnesota-Canada border entry

The officer died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A border officer died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at the northeast Minnesota border with Canada.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the body of a male U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) officer was found at the Grand Portage Port of Entry at around 6 p.m. Sunday.

It's believed the officer took his own life, the Sheriff's Office says. His identity is being withheld while the investigation continues and an autopsy is carried out.

Sheriff Pat Eliasen said the officer was "well known and respected in the community and protective services agencies," adding, "our hearts and prayers are with his family, colleagues and community during this difficult time."

"This is an extremely tough loss," he said.

The U.S. Highway 61 border point at Grand Portage is one of seven crossings between Minnesota and Canada, and one of three between the state and Ontario.

It's a Class A port, according to EZ Border Crossing. These are entry points that foreign nationals must use if they want to enter the United States.

U.S. Border says it's the second busiest border in Minnesota, taking around 800 vehicles every day. The busiest is at International Falls.
