Dairy farms evaporating throughout Minnesota

Long strenuous hours and rising operating costs can be blamed for fewer milk producers in Minnesota. The Star Tribune reports there are roughly 4,079 dairy farms in the state -- 356 fewer than in January 2011.

Minnesota is ranked seventh nationally in milk production. July production was up 1.1 percent, according to the Farmer’s Exchange.

MPR reports, high feed prices, brought on by the disastrous drought conditions, are making it difficult for dairy farmers to earn a profit.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture says last year’s beverage milk sales fell to the lowest level since 1984.
