A Dakota County judge was arrested in St. Paul on Christmas Eve for suspicion of DWI, the Pioneer Press reports.

St. Paul police spokesman Howie Padilla says 63-year-old Michael Vann Sovis of Apple Valley was the driver of an SUV that crashed into three parked cars in the 1200 block of St. Clair Avenue around 7:50 p.m.

Officers located the SUV on a snow bank nearby and say Sovis showed signs of impairment. Sovis' blood-alcohol concentration was not released.

The judge was booked into the Ramsey County Jail on suspicion of third-degree driving while impaired and was released Christmas Day.

Sovis was first appointed to the bench in 1988 by Governor Rudy Perpich and was elected four times since then. His current term expires in January 2015.
