Date set to fill seat of Rep. David Dill, who died of cancer this month

There will be a special election in December to fill the House District 3A seat following Rep. David Dill's death earlier this month.

Dill died at age 60 after undergoing cancer treatment at the Mayo Clinic since mid-July.

Gov. Mark Dayton called for the special election to be held Dec. 8 for those living in district 3A, which includes parts or all of Cook County, Koochiching County, Lake County and St. Louis County.

At least three Democrats have already said they plan to run for the position, including Koochiching County Commissioner Rob Ecklund, Ely City Councilor Heidi Omerza, and Bill Hansen, of Tofte, TimberJay reports.

There will also be a special election to fill the House District 46A seat vacated by Rep. Ryan Winkler, who resigned earlier this year to move to Europe with his family.

That election, for those living in parts of Hennepin County, will be Nov. 3, Dayton announced in June.

Peggy Flanagan, the executive director of the Children’s Defense Fund of Minnesota, will run unopposed for Winkler's seat – she was the only one to file for the seat during the filing period, MinnPost reported.
