Dayton to stay extra day at Mayo after spinal surgery

Gov. Mark Dayton will be spending New Year's Eve at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester -- a day longer than expected, The Associated Press reports.

Dayton's doctor advised the governor would benefit from staying an extra day in the hospital, the governor's spokeswoman said Monday.

Dayton, who will soon turn 66, successfully underwent spinal surgery last Thursday with no complications. The surgery involved fusing a vertebrae in an area that was shifting out of alignment.

He will reportedly return home Tuesday and will not be attending public events for a few weeks as he recovers at the governor's residence.
