A dead infant was found Tuesday morning in hospital linens that had been delivered from Regions Hospital to Crothall Laundry in Red Wing, Red Wing Police Chief Roger Pohlman told the Red Wing Republican Eagle.

Officials at Regions Hospital said the stillborn baby's body came from the hospital's morgue, MPR reported.

Chief nursing officer and vice president of patient care Christine Boese said that the baby was stillborn at 22 weeks at the hospital and was placed in Regions morgue, MPR reported. She said the remains were inadvertently included in soiled linen sent to the commercial laundry in Red Wing, where workers discovered it.

Witnesses reported the body was clothed in a diaper and had an ankle tag. Boese said hospital officials were contacting the baby's family.

The laundry had notified the hospital of the discovery before notifying police, and the hospital promptly retrieved the infant's body.

Pohlman said he couldn’t confirm the race or gender of the baby, the Star Tribune reported. He said officers were shown a photo of the body and that they interviewed witnesses at the service, the newspaper reported.

The Red Wing police have notified St. Paul police, but St. Paul police declined comment, the Pioneer Press reported.

Here's a statement from Red Wing Police.
