The Navy's newest fast-attack submarine, under construction since 2008 and christened with the name Minnesota last fall, is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy 11 months ahead of schedule, the Associated Press reports.

The contractor Huntington Ingalls Industries says the Virginia-class submarine built at Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia has passed its first of three rounds of sea trials this week, the AP reports.

Submarine Group Two Commander Ken Perry on the vessel's Facebook page said he was looking forward to the sub joining the fleet after commissioning in September.

Ellen Roughead, a Minnesota native and wife of former Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead, broke a bottle of champagne on the sub’s hull to christen it in October.

The vessel's commissioning committee has info about the two previous ships that were named for the state of Minnesota.
