Dems prepare for Obama speech; some already thinking about 2016

Some Minnesota Democrats at the party's national convention in Charlotte say they'd like to hear a note of unity in President Obama's speech Thursday night. The state DFL chairman hopes the president will outline a way for politicians to put down their swords and come together for the common good. Meanwhile, Sen. Amy Klobuchar's packed schedule is fueling speculation that she may be eyeing a campaign for higher office in 2016.

President Obama will address the Democratic National Convention Thursday night. What do Minnesota Democrats want to hear? Some wouldn't mind a softening of rhetoric and an emphasis on the common good over partisanship.

While many were looking forward to the president's speech, some are looking as far ahead as 2016. Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar's busy schedule of networking has fed speculation about her name appearing somewhere on a presidential ticket.

Klobuchar dropped in on the Iowa delegation (delivering the Sarah Palin-inspired line "I can see Iowa from my porch"). But she was far from the only aspiring Democratic candidate to do that.

Another open question about 2016 is where the Democrats will hold their party convention. Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak hopes the Twin Cities will be in the running.

Venue change shuts some Minnesotans out of Obama speech

DFL Party Chair Ken Martin says about 120 Minnesotans may not get to attend President Barack Obama's speech after all because weather forced the event indoors, MPR says. Handicapping 2016 ... President Klobuchar?

Most people have had enough of presidential politics for a while. But Washington Post political columnist Chris Cillizza can't help himself – and on his list of 13 possible candidates is Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., fresh from collecting 65 percent of the vote in her re-election bid.

U of M: Michelle Obama speech written at lofty 12th grade level

The University of Minnesota's Humphrey School of Public Affairs analyzed the speeches at the party conventions, looking at considerations such as sentence length and polysyllabic words. First Lady Michelle Obama's speech came in at a 12th grade level. That was by far the highest among presidential candidate's spouses since they started giving convention speeches 20 years ago. Higher than her husband's eighth-grade level State of the Union speeches, too.

Larry Jacobs of the University of Minnesota's Humphrey School of Public Affairs says Sen. Amy Klobuchar is ignoring her Republican challenger, Kurt Bills, who remains unknown to most Minnesotans. Jacobs says the "rose garden strategy" can work for a politician as popular as Klobuchar appears to be. And it might set her up for a spot as a running mate in 2016.
