Sartell Mayor Joe Perske tells the St. Cloud Times that he's closer to deciding whether he'll jump into the race for the U.S. House seat being vacated by Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn.

The DFLer says he could make an announcement as early as this week. Only one other Democrat has announced a campaign for the Sixth District seat, lead abatement activist Judy Adams. Perske, who is also a middle school teacher, said he was troubled that no other DFLers had leapt into the race. “Maybe I have to be that person,” he told the St. Cloud newspaper.

Republican candidates in the race: Tom Emmer, St. Cloud state Sen. John Pederson, Anoka County Board chair Rhonda Sivarajah and Taxpayers League of Minnesota President Phil Krinkie.

Bachmann in late May announced she would not seek a fifth term. Just a few days later, her high-profile DFL opponent Jim Graves also dropped out of the race.
