Forest tent caterpillars defoliated more than 60,000 acres of Minnesota trees last year and they're back for more this year. The Department of Natural Resources will use aerial surveys to map the areas where trees have suffered most. Caterpillar outbreaks can last three to five years.

Minn. DNR scraps lottery for turkey hunt

Turkey hunters in Minnesota will be able to buy a license over the counter for the first time this fall. Mesabi Daily News reports there are roughly 60,000 wild turkeys in the state. Wildlife officials say the lottery system isn't needed because the number of fall licenses available exceeded the number of hunters who applied. This fall's 30-day season runs from Sept. 29 through Oct. 28.

DNR to auction confiscated hunting and fishing equipment

The state agency has collected hundreds of items from people committing serious game violations. The sale includes guns, bows, fishing rods and reels, spears, tree stands and ice augers. It will be held in Zimmerman on Saturday, April 28.

Occupy Duluth protesters must remove tents by Sunday

The camp set up by activists at the Civic Center near city hall for more than a month must be removed by the end of the weekend. Police wouldn't say what action would be taken if the tents aren't removed by the deadline.
