“I am so pleased that I’ll be back in the game—not just to be back in the game, but to satisfy the needs of people who, for 32 years, trusted me to tell them the truth,” Shelby said. “I miss them and I miss the opportunity to do that.” Shelby said he’s excited for the opportunity to dive into a new and growing area of journalism where more and more people are finding is the go-to method for solid, credible information.

“One of my fears was that—as everyone gets pencils, everyone gets laptops—it will be harder and harder for the public to discern what is real and what is made up,” he said. “I know what Rick (Kupchella) stands for and what underlies the whole idea of BringMeTheNews. He wants that always to be in place—that this is real journalism.”

BringMeTheNews founder and CEO Rick Kupchella said he’s excited to bring on someone with Shelby’s caliber and credibility. “With this hire we are taking a newsroom with 170 years of combined, in-market experience and raising the bar higher still,” Kupchella said.

In addition to the chance to lead and mentor the newsroom, Shelby told Kupchella he is anxious to dive in to a new model for delivering news that connects with people. “He told me the thing that really gets him going here is the involvement in digital news reporting which he rightly sees as the future of news,” Kupchella said.

Shelby joined WCCO as anchor in 1978. Before stepping away from the anchor desk in 2010 Shelby earned two George Foster Peabody Awards and several Emmys, among many other awards.

He also earned the respect of admiration of the public and his peers. TV anchor, investigative journalist, radio host, author and web writer, Shelby continues to keep busy with journalistic endeavors and community outreach. He turned his long-time interest in sustainable energy into action by building a LEED Platinum certified house in Excelsior that is part of the Twin Cities Parade of Homes.

Rick Kupchella’s BringMeTheNews.com was founded in 2009, compiling news stories from all around the state in a simple, easy-to-access format. The news on the website feeds radio newscasts every hour for more than 30 radio stations around Minnesota. The site also incorporates a unique sponsorship model that incorporates content marketing within the day’s news stream.
