Dorset's newest mayor is youngest ever in state at 3 years old

The election results are in, and the city of Dorset now has its youngest mayor ever: 3-year-old James Tufts.

Mayor James is following in the footsteps of his brother Bobby Tuft's, who also served as mayor at age 3 and was re-elected at age 4. He was dubbed "America's cutest mayor," making national headlines.

James is two days younger than Bobby, so he's now the youngest mayor in Minnesota state history and making his own headlines.

James made his first campaign appearance Monday on WCCO with Bobby endorsing him.

"Be nice to people and look them in the eye when you speak," older brother Bobby tells James on NBC Nightly News, as advice to the incoming mayor.

Dorest is located near Park Rapids, and only has a population of about 25 people. As part of the town's Taste of Dorset festival, a new mayor is "elected" but not in a typical election process. People pay $1 to put someone's name in the hat for mayor, and the winner's name is drawn. James was elected Sunday.

Bobby lost the election in 2014, when his name wasn't pulled from the hat at the annual Taste of Dorset festival. Instead, the title went to 16-year-old Eric Mueller.

The mayor of Dorset has no official duties and doesn’t earn a salary.
