The downtown St. Paul Macy's department store will close March 16, company officials said, although they said the date could shift a day or two because the store is in the hands of liquidators, the Pioneer Press reported.
Macy's announced early this year that the longtime downtown fixture would close in March.
Store merchandise is disappearing amid a 50- to 70-percent off closeout sale, with the exception of cosmetics and fragrances.
Macy's was the last department store in downtown St. Paul, which will be without a department store for the first time in 130 years.
The departure has caused some hand-wringing among city and business leaders, but also sparked some excitement about the site's future.
St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman has called it an opportunity. He envisions an upscale retail/office tower.
