Sydney Dwyer hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh of today's Big Ten Tournament semifinal game against Illinois to send the University of Minnesota to their record-breaking 24th-straight victory and second straight championship appearance.
“This is the most complete team we’ve had,” Jessica Allister, the seventh-year coach told the Star Tribune.
The Gophers went 22-1 in conference play to win their first Big Ten regular-season title since 1991, and won a program record 52 games overall entering today.
Individually, their greatness was recognized as they swept Wednesday's Big Ten awards with catcher Kendyl Lindaman (Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year), Sara Groenewegen (Pitcher of the Year) and Allister (Coach of the Year) all winners.
Gophers softball will face the winner of today's Michigan State/Ohio State matchup in the Big Ten Championship game later Saturday evening.
