Drive safe: We're entering the 100 deadliest days on Minnesota roads

Last year, 120 people died during the 100-day stretch.

Buckle up, slow down, keep your eyes on the road, and don't drink and drive. We're entering the 100 deadliest days on Minnesota roads.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says the official start of the 100 deadliest days is Memorial Day, and it runs through Labor Day. But there will be a lot of people on the roads this weekend, and unfortunately some will probably try to drink and drive. So it doesn't hurt to be extra careful a few days early.

Last year, there were 392 deaths on Minnesota roads – 120 of those happened during the 100-day stretch.

Of those fatalities, 24 involved alcohol, 21 were speed-related, 11 had to do with distracted driving, and 21 involved people who weren't wearing their seat belts.

The DPS has data just for Memorial Day weekend too. In 2015 (which is the most recent holiday crash report), four people died and 216 were injured between 6 p.m. Friday and the end of Monday. Altogether, there were 486 crashes – so a little more than six crashes an hour.

Memorial Day is also one of the worst holidays for drunk driving. According to the DPS, about 4.3 drunk drivers are arrested every hour on the holiday. Labor Day's the worst for DWIs with 4.9 per hour. That's followed by St. Patrick's Day, July 4, and then Memorial Day.

Extra patrols

We are currently in the middle of a Click it or Ticket campaign that runs from May 22 to June 4. Extra patrols will be out to make sure people are buckled up.

Minnesotans are actually pretty good when it comes to wearing seat belts. About 93 percent of us are wearing them, the DPS says. Still, that leaves room for improvement, with 1,517 motorists ticketed last month for not buckling up during a two-week extra distracted driving enforcement period.

July 7 through July 23 there will be extra patrols out watching for speeding motorists.

Then from Aug. 18 to Sept. 3, law enforcement will crack down on drunk driving.
